Why CT in EVS & Geography?

Environmental science is fundamentally about systems — cycles, patterns, feedback loops. CT gives students the vocabulary to talk about those systems precisely and model them quantitatively.

Our Neighbourhood Water Cycle — Tracing Loops

Students trace the journey of water from rain to river to tap to drain — discovering that the water cycle is a repeating algorithm with feedback.

Learning Objective

Students will represent the water cycle as a loop algorithm and identify the feedback mechanism that keeps it running.

Activity Steps
  1. Start with a glass of water: 'Where did this water come from?'
  2. Students draw the journey: cloud → rain → river → treatment plant → tap → drain → river → evaporation → cloud.
  3. Label each arrow with the process (evaporation, condensation, filtration, etc.).
  4. Identify the loop: where does the cycle restart?
  5. Discuss feedback: what happens if rainfall reduces? (river level drops → less evaporation → less rain — a negative feedback loop)

Climate Data Detective — Reading India's Weather Patterns

Students download real IMD data, plot it in a spreadsheet, and identify India's monsoon patterns — applying pattern recognition to real scientific data.

Students will work with real meteorological data to identify seasonal patterns and distinguish signal from noise.

Activity Steps
  1. Provide a pre-downloaded IMD rainfall dataset for one city (e.g., Pune) for 12 months.
  2. Students enter data into a spreadsheet and create a bar chart.
  3. Identify the monsoon peak (June–September) as a pattern.
  4. Compare with a second city (e.g., Chennai) — south-west vs. north-east monsoon.
  5. Abstract: what variables did we keep? (rainfall only) What did we ignore? (humidity, wind speed)
